You’ve been making ice cubes all wrong — here’s the best way to avoid a big, wet mess

It might be time to put your method on ice.

Life hack experts at @lifehackerau on TikTok revealed how people have been filling old-school ice cube trays incorrectly — and in the sloppiest way possible.

“You’ve been doing it wrong this whole time,” the video narrator said.

This process usually entails filling an empty tray of ice cube slots, but many people struggle to get water inside every pocket without making a mess.

Typically, they’ll lay the tray flat as the water pours on it — with it splashing up and not allowing every slot to be filled equally.

In the resurfaced clip, uploaded in 2023, a man demonstrates his correct way to fill a tray without water splattering all over the kitchen counter.

“All you have to do is angle at the square in the middle and it will just run down,” he said, showing that the water streams onto the flat areas dividing the molds, filling each section before moving on to the next one.

“No spills,” he reveals with satisfaction.

Another content creator, @4jmjcbitxh, unveiled this discovery in 2020, calling it a “life-changing” hack.

“These little flat spots on the ice cube tray are where you are supposed to fill in the water,” she revealed in a clip with more than 4 million views.

“Am I just dumb or did nobody else know this either?”

However, she wasn’t the only one feeling gobsmacked by the simple tip to avoid headaches and waterworks.

“What da heck!? This is revolutionary!” wrote one person.

“I was today years old when I learned this,” admitted another.

“I thought it was to stack them, or does my brain not work,” quipped a jokester.

“I pay $40k a year for college, yet I learn so much more from TikTok,” wrote a student.

Meanwhile, some people were shocked at how many people didn’t know how to use an ice tray properly.

“No one knows this?” added a watcher. “You literally let the water fill one place and it flows to the rest.”
