How the Mets identified and tried to fix the vulnerability that could course-correct their season

During a pregame hitters’ meeting on Aug. 16, Eric Chavez challenged his group in hopes it could talk and work its way toward a solution.

“There’s a trend right now,” the Mets co-hitting coach said that day, before his team beat the Marlins, 7-3, at Citi Field. “Teams are throwing us a lot of spin, and we’re not very good on it.

“What do you guys want to do?”

The Mets’ hitting group identified a problem. A week and a half later, the team is still trying to solve it.
